Homegrown Sustainable Agricultural Practices
HVN promotes organic, cost-effective, and ethical agricultural solutions by reviving indigenous farming techniques in crop and livestock production. These practices aim to lower production costs, improve food safety, and restore community control over food systems.
Strategic Focus Area Two: Sustainable Agriculture & Food Security
Food sovereignty is central to community well-being, yet many smallholder farmers face rising input costs, declining soil health, and vulnerability to climate shocks. HVN will respond by promoting organic, indigenous, and cooperative farming systems that are cost-effective, eco-friendly, and socially inclusive.
Our two(2) flagship programs anchor this focus area:
a) Ukulima Mambolea
This program promotes organic and eco-friendly farming as a sustainable alternative to chemical input dependency. This program does the following:
- Train farmers on composting, bio-fertilizer production, and indigenous pest control methods.
- Establish demonstration farms in each community to showcase best practices.
- Promote nutrition-sensitive agriculture by encouraging diverse, organic diets.
- Encourage farmer-to-farmer knowledge exchange and apprenticeship.
Expected Impact: Reduced input costs, improved soil fertility, healthier communities, and increased adoption of indigenous farming practices.
b) Kilimo Shirika
This program seeks to unlock the power of cooperation and economies of scale in farming communities. On this we:
- Mobilize farmers into zonal clusters based on comparative advantage crops.
- Facilitate collective marketing, bulk purchasing of inputs, and shared storage facilities.
- Support homegrown value addition initiatives to increase farmer incomes.
- Build farmer cooperatives that strengthen bargaining power and market access.
Expected Impact: Increased farmer incomes, improved market linkages, stronger farmer solidarity, and reduced post-harvest losses.
Previous Achievements
Over the past years, HVN has:
- – Trained farmers to prepare homemade organic inputs using locally available materials.
- – Supported farmer groups in establishing vertical kitchen gardens with organic attributes.
- – Mobilized local communities towards safe, climate-smart agriculture.
– Organized artistic members into the Sanaa Culture Arts Association, a Homegrown initiative that applies art as a medium for climate action. Through Sanaa Culture, we have successfully undertaken upcycling projects—repurposing waste into productive tools and artworks—demonstrating the value of creativity in addressing environmental challenges
